Alec L. Rubenstein

Senior Counsel

Alec has nearly thirty years of experience representing real estate owners, developers, managers and lenders in transactional and operational matters.  He has worked with clients ranging from individual investors to national real estate operating companies, on projects involving office, hotel, industrial, multi-family, student housing and mixed-use real estate.

Alec has a special appreciation for the needs and concerns of his clients, having served as long time in-house counsel to a national real estate investment trust and then to the shared real estate services provider of one of the world’s largest private equity fund managers.  Alec has played key legal roles in national portfolio transactions, complex construction and development projects, and company-wide strategic operations initiatives.  At the same time, he has served as a trusted, day-to-day counselor to his clients at every level of management.  Alec has worked on projects as diverse as the redevelopment of the Ferry Building in San Francisco, Russia Wharf on the Boston waterfront and the Willis Tower in Chicago.  He has also been instrumental in helping his clients structure and negotiate national contracts for property management and many other services, and has served as in-house “general counsel” for his client’s captive property insurer.

Prior to Alec’s in-house work, he was a transactional partner at a highly regarded Chicago boutique law firm serving both private and public sector clients, and was also part of the real estate and public finance practice at a leading regional Chicago firm.
